Jason Scull
Bio:
Jason Scull grew up in a family that has ranched in Texas since the 1830’s and continues in that tradition. Born in 1958, his youth was filled with work related to the cow business on the family ranch near San Marcos, Texas. Those early years framed the direction that his art would eventually take, the depiction of the horse and cow people of South Texas in bronze, both contemporary and historical.
Like many artists, Scull began drawing and modeling in clay as a child and continued to draw and paint through high school and college. He attended Texas A&M University, where he studied animal science for two years. In 1987, the pull of a closely held dream of becoming a professional sculptor became strong enough that Jason made the decision to pursue art as a full time vocation and he has never turned back. Largely self taught, Scull has taken workshops from and studied privately with nationally recognized artists including Eugene Daub, Edward Fraughton, Mehl Lawson, Bill Moyers, Garland Weeks, and Jack Swanson, who mentored Scull as he began his career. It is the knowledge gleaned from this sort of study, from reading, from the study of anatomy, from the study of artists - both past and present, a passion for creating, combined with a daily observation of life that enables Jason to produce his works.
Scull’s work can be found in public, private, and corporate art collections across the United States, Canada, and Great Britain and has been shown in galleries in Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas. Recognized publications that have featured Jason and his work include Art of the West, Western Horseman, The Austin-American Statesman, and The San Antonio Express News. Shows that he has participated in include the Haley Library Art Show, Midland, Texas; the Cowboy Classic, Albuquerque, New Mexico (Best Sculpture, 1995); the Mountain Oysters Show, Tucson, Arizona; the Working Ranch Cowboy Association World Championship Ranch Rodeo, Amarillo, Texas (Directors Trophy 1997, 1998); Beyond the 98th Meridian, Images of the American West, Sedona, Arizona; Trappings of the American West, Flagstaff, Arizona; Night of the Artists, San Antonio, Texas; and The Branding Iron Show, Tucson, Arizona.
Jason believes he is blessed beyond measure to be supported by a loving wife pursuing a living by doing what he truly enjoys, the creation of bronze sculpture. Jason, his wife Dianne, and their son Will live near San Marcos, Texas.
