Joan C. Kosel
Discipline(s): Wood carving
Bio:
Joan C. Kosel was born and raised outside of Red Lodge, Montana, where she and her brothers and sisters attended a country school until the 8th grade, after which they were home-schooled. As a young girl, Joan watched her father carve and one day asked him if he would teach her to carve, too. At the time she was fourteen years old, and she has been carving ever since. Now 22, Joan carves elaborate wildlife sculptures from black walnut. She works entirely in the subtractive method. This process is extremely unforgiving, since any unintentional cuts can mean starting over, but it demonstrates the high level of accomplishment that this young artist has achieved.

Joan has done some painting in the past but finds that her true passion is carving. Likewise, she has experimented with other subject matter but always comes back to wildlife, particularly the Western wildlife that surrounds her in the Red Lodge, Montana wilderness. Joan carves bison, bears, moose, elk, big horn sheep, and mountain goats with exceptional skill and knowledge of the animals.

All of Joan’s walnut carvings are signed and numbered by the artist and are certain to provide collectors with many years of enjoyment.
